Boxing Day 2014

On a cool but dry Boxing Day morning, a few players from the band met at the bandroom at 9 o’clock to play carols around the streets of Freckleton. Playing through until a buffet  lunch at Alan and Diane’s, the band then played the last (informal) concert of the year at a packed Coach and Horses pub.

Thank you to the people of Freckleton for supporting us this Christmas and throughout the year, without you we could not carry this tradition forward from year to year.

Derek our drummer can put his sleigh bells back in the toy box until next December!

National Finals Cheltenham 2013

Band and DuckThe band travelled to Cheltenham for the National Brass Band Championship on 22nd September 2013 where they came 11th competing in the 1st section. Although the band played well, they were understandably disappointed with the result, in an otherwise enjoyable weekend.

For several members of the band, it was their first experience of a National Finals competition and a chance for all the band to get away together with family and friends for a weekend.

Fanfares and Love Songs by the young composer Gavin Higgins was chosen as the set work for the sixteen bands to play. It presented technical and musical challenges for both the players and conductors, whilst at the same time being a piece the audience could enjoy listening to.

A Helpful Suggestion for Parents…

School’s out! What have you got planned for the week? Camping in the Lakes, lots of trips to interesting museums, Disneyland? Or will you be glad when the lickle ones are back at school tormenting their teachers having been bored, squabbling and getting under your feet all week with the rain hammering on the window?

Here’s an idea for you, once the holidays are over, we’ll take them off your hands for an hour on a Monday night at junior band where they can learn an instrument and make new friends. What’s the catch? Only that children and musical instruments can make an infernal racket, but eventually they will be able to play recognizable tunes and perform in concerts and you’ll be very proud of them.

We are really pleased to announce that Kath Threlfall is our new conductor/tutor who has a quite impressive CV and is a real, proper music teacher. Gail Howard has “agreed” to taking over the administration role and will be helping with the cornettists. Other members of the senior band help out too.

So, see you on Monday 25th February at 7pm.
